CARTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES ON EXHIBIT AT THE MUSIC CENTER'S LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/IRA GERSHWIN GALLERY IN DISNEY HALL
LOS ANGELES (April 25, 2006) - A new exhibit featuring historical maps
of Los Angeles from the collections of the Library of Congress Geography
and Map Division recently opened at the Music Center of Los Angeles
County. The exhibition is on view in the Library of Congress/Ira
Gershwin Gallery at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Gallery, measuring
just 74 square feet, is the only permanent exhibit space of the Library
of Congress outside of Washington D.C.
These diverse works of craftsmanship, precision, and imagination provide
a guide to some of the most remarkable stories of the city's history:
its discovery, its growth, and its industries, as seen by explorers,
engineers, artists, residents, and boosters. The oldest map, drawn in
1639, depicts California as an island, the prevailing interpretation
among most 17th-century-geographers. The most recent is a Soviet
military map of the region created during the Cold War. The early
history of Los Angeles may be seen in the 1873 manuscript map of the Los
Angeles Pueblo.
Several of the maps on exhibit feature the early years of the twentieth
century, when Los Angeles grew to take its place as a major metropolis.
These works include detailed city commuter rail maps, engineering
drawings of the Los Angeles aqueduct, and early road maps published by
the Automobile Club of Southern California. The exhibition also features
tourist maps of Hollywood and the homes of movie stars from the 1930's,
as well as a colorful and richly detailed depiction of Los Angeles
history by artist Jo Mora (1942).
"The joy in putting together this exhibition has been to highlight Los
Angeles history with a wide range of maps created originally for a
variety of users," stated exhibition curator Sam Brylawski, "it is a
wonderful opportunity to mine riches of the Library of Congress map
collections to share with Los Angeles."
The exhibit is ongoing and the gallery is open during all performances.
For those not attending a performance, the gallery can be visited by
taking a tour of the Concert Hall. Tour options include guided or self
guided audio tours. Prices range from $10-$15 per person and are
available most days, closed Tuesdays. For tour information, contact
(213) 972-4399 or visit musiccenter.org.The Library of Congress/Ira Gershwin Gallery, established in 2003, isthe only satellite exhibit space of the Library of Congress outside of
Washington D.C. and provides Angelenos direct access to its wonderful
collections. The Gallery, designed by Hodgetts and Fung Design
Associates, was made possible by a generous gift from the Ira and
Leonore Gershwin Trust for the Benefit of the Library of Congress.
