SAVE OUR HISTORY
Las Angelitas del Pueblo is the winner of THE HISTORY CHANNEL'S first ever national Save Our History Preservation Award in 2004 !
The HISTORY CHANNEL, along with Preserve America, a White House initiative designed to preserve the history of America, earlier this year created the Save Our History program. The purpose was to have historical organizations work with students around the country to teach the "importance of historical preservation and to motivate communities across the country to identify and help save endangered local historic sites, locations and documents for the enjoyment and exploration of future generations."
Over 55,000 students participated and 15 schools around the country won the Save Our History Classroom Award (a $1,000 grant and a trip to Washington DC for the Awards Banquet, a sunset cruise on the Potomac River and special tours of the Smithsonian Museum). One organization won the Save Our History Preservation Award (a $10,000 award, to be designated for historical preservation use along with a trip to Washington, D.C.), which was based on the most outstanding commitment to the initiative by "actively providing preservation education to the school system, providing leadership and guidance in helping the community understand the significance of their local heritage and motivating and engaging the community and the schools in an important preservation project."
Las Angelitas del Pueblo was honored to be chosen as the national winner of the Save Our History Preservation Award. Las Angelitas del Pueblo worked with Belmont High School in Los Angeles on a project depicting the history of Pico House, the first 3-story building in Los Angeles (built in 1870). Belmont High School was one of 15 schools across the country to win the Classroom Award. Bob Aguirre, Vice President of Las Angelitas del Pueblo and Frank Damon, Director of Training of Las Angelitas del Pueblo were the liasons working with with 18 seniors at Belmont High School.
These amazing and creative students created a 10-minute video, a brochure, a poster and a website pertaining to the history of Pico House. These students made their final presentation to Las Angelitas del Pueblo on June 7, 2004 at its Annual Luncheon to show all Angelitas what they have created. Their work will be used by El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the "birthplace of Los Angeles" to show to future visitors and for all to enjoy and to learn more about the history of Pico House. |
