NEW: CLICK ON MEMBER EVENTS LINK FOR THE 2007 CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR EL PUEBLO DE LOS ANGELES! Las Angelitas del Pueblo is a wonderful group of volunteer docents who give free tours of El Pueblo de Los Angeles to the public. The group consists of people who have a deep knowledge and love of the history of Los Angeles, a commitment to the city and who want to share this knowledge and commitment with others. Las Angelitas del Pueblo traces its roots to the summer of 1966. Originally starting out as giving bus tours of "old Los Angeles," by 1969 Las Angelitas del Pueblo was actually formed as an organization and presented the idea of giving free tours of the "old Plaza to the State Historical Commission. The commission accepted the proposal and a Visitors Center was officially opened and tours began on Sunday, June 8, 1969. The concept was to provide educational and historically accurate walking tours of the Plaza and to continue bus tours and slide presentations. The original membership in Las Angelitas del Pueblo consisted of twenty dedicated, knowledgeable, energetic women volunteers. Since then many more historical minded women and men have joined the group and today there are over sixty active docents giving tours. In 1974, the California Historical Society selected Las Angelitas del Pueblo to receive their Annual Merit Award. Every year, over 11,000 men, women and children are given tours of the "old Plaza of Los Angeles." Las Angelitas del Pueblo was honored in May, 2004 when it was awarded THE HISTORY CHANNEL'S Save Our History Preservation Award. This is a nationwide program launched in January, 2004 along with Preserve America, a White House program designed to preserving historic sites and areas throughout America. Las Angelitas del Pueblo worked with 18 very dedicated, talented and creative seniors from Belmont High School in Los Angeles, a winner of the Save Our History Classroom Award. The Belmont High School students created a 10-minute video, a brochure, a poster and a website on the history of Pico House, the first three-story building in Los Angeles, built in 1870. The video, brochure, poster and website will be used at El Pueblo for people to see and enjoy, and to learn more about Pico House. We invite the public to come down to El Pueblo de Los Angeles, a State Historical Monument, where Los Angeles was founded and take a free, historical walking tour while enjoying the many other activites and sights found in La Plaza area. They include Olvera Street, the adjoining Plaza, the oldest church in Los Angeles, the oldest building in Los Angeles (Ávila Adobe), 27 historic buildings and sites, 5 museums and countless great restaurants and shops.
